The First Aid at Work (First Aider)

A First Aider is a person who has been trained by, and holds a current certificate of an organisation whose training and qualifications are approved by the Health and Safety Executive.

First Aiders are trained to deal with the majority of emergency situations that can occur in the workplace, but may require extra training if special conditions exist at work, (e.g. use of breathing equipment if they might have to enter a dangerous atmosphere to administer first aid).

First Aid certificates issued by such organisations are valid for 3 years and the First Aider must re-qualify before the certificate expires.

Training courses for a First Aid at Work qualification are 18 hours (3 days) in duration. Re-qualification courses are 2 days in duration, but must be taken before the first aid certificate expires or the candidate has to attend a full 3 day course and cover:

  • Managing emergencies,
  • Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
  • Shock and circulatory disorders,
  • Bleeding,
  • Broken bones,
  • Burns & scalds,
  • Temperature related injuries,
  • Crush injuries,
  • Convulsions,
  • Medical emergencies,
  • Poisoning,
  • Epilepsy & asthma,
  • Foreign object intrusion,
  • First aid kits and equipment,
  • Record keeping.
